Gov Otti of Abia State
The oil producing area in Abia State is demanding for the Ukwa East/Ukwa West House of Representatives seat in 2027, to address the unfair treatment it has suffered over the years.
The area, through a political pressure group, Ukwa Equity and Justice Group (UEJG), has therefore called on political parties to allocate their tickets for the seat in the 2027 election to candidates from the Ukwa West Local Government Area.
A statement by C. Nwachi, chairman and O. S. Michael, secretary, stated that the Ukwa East Local Government Area has monopolized the seat over 20 years while Ukwa West, a component part of the federal constituency, has held the position for only eight years since the commencement of the current democratic dispensation.
UEJG noted that the only time a person from Ukwa West went to the House was when Chinonyerem Macebuh was elected to the House of Representatives from 1999 to 2007.
It stated that in the spirit of equity and fairness, the late Macebuh voluntarily stepped down to allow Ukwa East to nominate Emeka Stanley in 2007.
The group observed that since then, Ukwa East has retained the position, with Chief Uzoma Abonta and Chief Chris Nkwonta, the incumbent being in the saddle.
While the group is of the opinion that by 2027, Ukwa East would have held the seat for 20 years, against natural justice, it appealed to the leaders of all political parties in Abia State to allocate the Ukwa East/West Federal Constituency tickets to Ukwa West in 2027.
The group vowed that the people of Ukwa West would not support any party that fails to address this perceived imbalance in representation within the constituency.
It appealed to Governor Alex Otti to ensure that Ukwa West’s aspiration to produce the next representative is realized as history would have been kind to him. (The Sun)
