Lagos residents to earn cash for recyclables

Lagos residents can now earn cash by trading recyclable waste, as government revives its waste-to-wealth scheme.

The Lagos State Government has reintroduced its Cash for Trash initiative, encouraging residents to exchange recyclable waste for cash in a renewed effort to promote recycling and environmental sustainability across the city.

The state’s Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the development recently via his X (formerly Twitter) handle, noting that the programme aims to reduce waste pollution and reward residents for their participation.

He explained that the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) Recycling Team is currently stationed in Lagos Island, demonstrating how households can convert their sorted waste, such as plastics, cans, and bottles, into income.

“Did you know your trash can turn into cash?” Wahab wrote. “Our @Lawma_gov Recycling Team is on the ground in Lagos Island, showing communities how to make it happen! We’re rewarding residents every Thursday for helping us keep Lagos clean and green. It’s a win for your wallet and a win for our city!” “Get involved and see the value in your waste.”

In a video shared alongside the post, LAWMA officials were seen weighing bags of recyclables on portable scales before handing out cash rewards to participants.

The initiative, a long-standing programme under the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, seeks to reduce the impact of climate change, promote a circular economy, and instil a culture of environmental responsibility among Lagosians.

Wahab urged residents to take advantage of the initiative, saying it demonstrates the government’s commitment to a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Lagos. (ARISE NEWS)
