Payloader kills Ogun pregnant woman, injures four in auto crash

A heavy-duty payloader vehicle crushed a pregnant woman to death and caused injuries to four others in an accident that occurred along the Akarigbo Road in the Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State.

This comes barely three days after a road crash that occurred opposite the Redemption Camp along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway claimed one life, while four others sustained injuries.

PUNCH Metro learnt on Thursday from an eyewitness who identified himself as John Olakunle that the accident happened at about 9 a.m. opposite a bank located in the area.

Olakunle narrated that the payloader vehicle lost control and swerved to the other side of the road before ramming into a tricycle and a car.

He said, “An accident occurred this morning along the Akarigbo Road in Sagamu LGA. A Payloader lost control and crossed from one lane to the other lane. It rammed into a Camry vehicle and a tricycle.

“One pregnant woman was in the tricycle that was crushed, and she is feared dead at the moment. About three other people sustained serious injuries and were rescued by residents of the area to different hospitals.”

When contacted for a reaction, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the accident.

Akinbiyi identified the vehicles involved as an unregistered Payloader, a Toyota Camry with number plate AAB-248 MK, and a commercial tricycle with number plate JGB-643 VD.

He noted that the eyewitness account at the scene of the incident indicated that the Payloader had lost control while in motion, swerved to the other side of the road, and collided with the car and the tricycle.

According to him, the impact of the collision led to the death of a pregnant woman and injuries to four other victims in the accident.

“Based on the eyewitness’s account, the payloader lost control and swerved from the opposite lane- outbound Sabo – into the other lane – inbound Sabo – and rammed into both the tricycle and the Camry.

“The payloader thereby caused the presumed death of an adult pregnant woman, severe injuries to other adult males in the tricycle, while the payloader operator had few bruises; the Camry driver sustained a serious degree of injury.”

He added that five people were involved, including four adult males and one adult female, adding that the adult female died in the crash.

“The presumed dead woman has been deposited at a morgue, while the injured have been transported by bystanders to various hospitals in Sagamu,” Akinbiyi concluded.

Fatal road crashes involving heavy-duty vehicles have become a recurring tragedy in Ogun State.

In August 2024, PUNCH Metro reported that a truck crushed five people to death along the Ijebu-Ode–Benin Expressway, after its brakes reportedly failed, signifying one of several fatal crashes linked to loss of control and speeding by truck drivers.

Similarly, PUNCH Metro reported last Friday that five people were crushed to death by a truck along the Papalanto-Ilaro road.

These incidents highlight ongoing road safety concerns in Ogun State, particularly involving heavy-duty vehicles on major highways. (PUNCH)
