Bremen summon Boniface over social media posts

Victor Boniface, Werder Bremen forward

Werder Bremen forward, Victor Boniface, has been summoned by the club’s hierarchy after a series of controversial social media posts drew criticism in Germany, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The 24-year-old striker, on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, joined Bremen in the summer and was heralded as the new focal point in attack.

However, EXPRESS News reported that he has unsettled the club with unusual online activity and must now report to the bosses for talks.

“Boniface has caused real trouble at Werder Bremen. The reason is strange social media posts. Now the striker has to report to the bosses,” the German outlet reported.

Over the years, Boniface has gained attention not for only his football but for unusual activity online. According to EXPRESS, he recently posted a picture of his damaged car mirror on Snapchat, followed by a cryptic message on Instagram.

He then shared a piece of advice on Instagram that sparked widespread reaction.

“If you waste your money on too many women, you will not achieve anything in life. Find yourself one or two women and settle down. At most three women, or if you are going through a lot, four is also okay,” Boniface wrote on Instagram.

While Nigerians that has been following the striker are used to these types of humorous posts from him, BILD via EXPRESS, reported that the meaning of his posts was unclear to his new employers and both parties will resolve it behind closed doors.

“The meaning behind the posts remains unclear. Neither Boniface nor the club has commented publicly, but Werder’s hierarchy intend to resolve the issue internally and have invited him for a meeting,” they added.

The particular post of Boniface urging young men not to waste money on multiple partners but that up to four could be acceptable in certain circumstances also drew attention of Canadian rapper Drake who responded on Instagram with a laughing emoji and Boniface further sparked amusement among fans when he responded to Drake to seek more advice from him privately.

“Bro, dm for more advice,” he wrote.

The striker has also clashed with online critics on the issue recently. When one accused him of lacking professionalism and contributing to the decline of his career, Boniface responded by mocking her wig.

His sharp retort quickly went viral and divided opinion about whether he should ignore trolls or defend himself.

Boniface’s career has also had setbacks on the pitch. He was reported to have failed a medical at AC Milan due to recurring knee problems before making a surprise switch to Bremen.

Since arriving in Bremen, he has managed to play 45 minutes in two games, registering an assist in the club’s 4–0 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach which was his debut and then followed that up with a 3–0 defeat to Freiburg.

Head coach Horst Steffen was critical of his positioning afterwards, quoted by EXPRESS saying, “He was too much everywhere. It should be the case that he stays more in the centre. It was not as I wanted.”

Despite that criticism, Steffen praised his energy in training, highlighting his impressive play ahead of Friday night’s Bundesliga fixture against Bayern Munich.

Boniface also expressed enthusiasm about his new chapter, revealing that he chose the number 44 shirt at Bremen because his preferred number 22 was already taken by defender Julian Malatini. (The PUNCH)
