Rivers State governor Siminalayi Fubara
There is wild jubilation in Rivers State Wednesday evening following the announcement by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the immediate end of the six-month emergency rule in Rivers State.
Traders at Mile One and Mile 3 markets, as well as commercial motorists who got wind that the President would lift the emergency rule in the State, were glued to their mobile radio gadgets, monitoring the 6 p.m. news aired by local radio stations based in Port Harcourt.
Observations by The Guardian showed that immediately the newscaster on the 6 p.m. news announced that the emergency rule had been lifted by the President and Governor Siminalayi Fubara and others reinstated, the traders, motorists, and residents went agog with jubilation.
Some of them, including meat sellers, turned their knives and tables into drums, beating to the rhythm of danceable music.
Tomato sellers were also seen using their measurement containers to play music. Some motorists plying Ikwere Road to Ada George, Rumokoro, and Ogbogoro, among others, in excitement reduced transport fares, while some drove recklessly.
Observations inside Government Reserved Areas, especially in places like Casablaka, showed that residents took their joy to the streets, thereby causing gridlocks.
Meanwhile, it is expected that the city will witness increased jubilation tomorrow as they await the return of the governor to the State capital.
