The UEFA Champions League is back, and with it comes the excitement, drama, and spectacle that football fans across the world crave.

For Nigerians, the 2025/26 Champions League holds an extra spark, as several of the country’s finest talents will be strutting their stuff on Europe’s biggest stage. From proven stars to emerging prospects, these players will not only be representing their clubs but also flying the green-and-white flag proudly.

Nigeria has a rich history of producing Champions League heroes, from the days of Nwankwo Kanu and Finidi George with Ajax, to John Obi Mikel’s triumph with Chelsea in 2012. That tradition continues today, with a new generation carrying the hopes of millions of fans back home. Each player enters this season with a unique storyline, some seeking redemption, others chasing glory, and a few looking to announce themselves to the world.

The 2025/26 edition will see Nigerian players feature across Europe’s biggest leagues, competing against football’s elite. Whether it’s the goal-scoring power of Victor Osimhen, the creative flair of Ademola Lookman, the dynamism of Nathan Tella, the midfield engine of Raphael Onyedika, or the youthful promise of George Ilenikhena, Nigerian presence in the Champions League is as strong as ever.

As the group stage kicks off, all eyes will be on how these stars rise to the challenge. Their performances could prove decisive not only for their clubs but also in inspiring the next wave of Nigerian footballers dreaming of reaching the same stage.

In this article, Sporting Tribune spotlights five Nigerian players to watch in the 2025/26 Champions League.

Victor Osimhen

Having helped his new club, Galatasaray return to the Champions League, all eyes set on the one-time African Best Player to do his magic at Europe’s highest competition. His team will play against the biggest competition’s rivals like Liverpool, Man City, Atletico Madrid, Monaco, Ajax and others, providing an opportunity for his home-based fans to see their star player against the competition’s heavyweights.

Ademola Lookman

Even though Lookman has not played in any pre-season friendlies for Atalanta since the end of the 2024/25 campaign after a failed summer move to Inter Milan, many Nigerian fans are expecting to see the current African Best Player of the Year playing against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.

Nathan Tella

Nathan Adewale Temitayo Tella is a Nigerian player who was called up on 10 November 2023, by Nigeria former head coach, José Peseiro for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

As part of the Bayern Leverkusen’s squad that won the 2023/2024 Bundesliga campaign, home-based fans are looking forward to seeing Tella make his Champions League debut.

Raphael Onyedika

As Club Brugge set to face AS Monaco in this season’s UEFA Champions League on Thursday, Raphael Onyedika would be hopeful of being instrumental in their quest for the European victory.

George Ilenikhena

As the French side AS Monaco set to play Club Brugge on Thursday in their Champions League fixture, it only means one for George Ilenikhena that he would be eyeing another Champions League and playing against his countryman, Raphael Onyedika. (Nigerian Tribune)
