The Kano State Police Command has stepped in to mediate the dispute between Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) and the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO).
The two bodies have been locked in heated exchange over a controversial power disconnection that reportedly disrupted critical medical services and sparked public outrage in the hospital.
The intervention, led by Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori,’, came in the wake of allegations that the blackout contributed to the death of patients on life support at AKTH.
However, in a statement on Monday, KEDCO strongly denied the claim, accusing the hospital of blackmail.
According to a statement issued by the Kano Police Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa on Monday, the high-level meeting convened at the Bompai Police Headquarters in the state brought together AKTH’s Chief Medical Director, Prof. A. Abba Sheshe, and KEDCO’s Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Abubakar Shuaibu Jimeta.
The dialogue, according to Kiyawa, focused on resolving the impasse and restoring electricity to the hospital, which had been operating under strained conditions due to the outage.
According to the statement, “Both parties expressed appreciation for the police’s timely intervention. KEDCO reportedly agreed to restore power to the hospital immediately, signaling a willingness to de-escalate the crisis.
“The Police Command emphasized its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, noting that the resolution ensures uninterrupted operation of vital health services,” Kiyawa added.
The statement also said the police commissioner praised both AKTH and KEDCO for their cooperation and pledged continued support to maintain peace and stability in the state. (Daily Trust)
