Nigeria, US deepen military ties on smarter firepower, civilian protection

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) and the United States Government have renewed their commitment to strengthening joint military operations with a focus on smarter firepower delivery and stronger civilian protection.

The commitment was reaffirmed during a courtesy visit to Hassan Bala Abubakar, Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), by a delegation from the United States Institute of Security Governance, led by Miguel Castellanos, a retired Major General.

Abubakar highlighted the progress recorded under the ongoing Air-to-Ground Integration (AGI) programme, which is supported by the United States.

He explained that the initiative has improved the Air Force’s ability to deliver precision strikes in support of ground operations while significantly reducing the risks posed to civilian populations.

“The Air-Ground Integration programme has sharpened our capacity to deliver firepower at the right place and at the right time with precision and restraint.

“Beyond enhancing synergy across the Services, it reinforces our commitment to safeguarding civilian lives in conflict zones. The technical and advisory support provided by the United States has been instrumental in making this progress possible”, Abubakar said.

In his remarks, Castellanos praised the professionalism and visionary leadership of the Nigerian Air Force, noting that Nigeria was now playing a pioneering role in embedding Civilian Harm Mitigation (CHM) across military operations in the region.

“What we are developing together is more than operational capabilities; it is a system that ensures effectiveness while protecting civilian populations.

“Nigeria’s leadership in advancing Civilian Harm Mitigation sets a strong example for the region, and the United States is proud to stand as a partner in this endeavour,” Castellanos said.

Both parties agreed that the ultimate goal of the AGI programme is to institutionalize joint processes across Nigeria’s Armed Forces, enabling them to counter emerging threats effectively while adhering to humanitarian standards. (BusinessDay)
