Climate change: Anambra farmers lament looming drought, poor crop performance

Farmers in Anambra State have expressed concern over the inadequacy of rainfall this year, lamenting the negative effects on their farming activities.

The farmers, who blamed the sad situation on climate change, said that the late return of the rains, coupled with its abnormally low and irregular nature affected their crops’ performance.

Mr. John Udemezue, a farmer in Ayamelum Local Government Area of the state, lamented: “Rice is one crop that requires a lot of water. But because there is no enough rainfall now, some of them have started dying.”

Also, in Awka North LGA, Mr. Chimezie Udekwe from Urum community, who noted late commencement of rainy season, also stated: “We waited for the rains so we can embark on our farming activities but it didn’t come. So when it eventually started raining, it was late.” (Sunday Sun)
