The Police Command in Katsina State says one of its officers has been injured following an attack by a man suspected to be mentally unstable in Kakumi village, Bakori Local Government Area.

Sources said the incident occurred at about 5:50 p.m. when the suspect, identified as Rabiu Hamisu, 35, attacked ASP Abdullahi Mohammed of the 7 PMF Sokoto, who was on special duty at Kakumi village.

“The suspect used a sharp object to inflict lacerations on the officer’s ear and forehead before seizing his riot gun and striking him on the head.

“In the process of attempting to escape with the weapon, the suspect was shot and sustained injuries,” the sources said.

He said both the officer and the suspect were rushed to Kankara Hospital, where the officer was admitted and is responding to treatment, while the suspect was later confirmed dead by a medical doctor.

The sources added that relatives of the deceased told the police he had been mentally unstable and had wandered away from their custody. (Zagazola)
