Nigeria submits bid to host 2030 Commonwealth Games in Abuja

Nigeria has formally submitted its bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, positioning the capital city, Abuja, as the proposed venue. If successful, it would mark the first time an African country stages the multi-sport event.

The 2030 edition will coincide with the centenary of the Commonwealth Games, which began as the British Empire Games in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930. Abuja’s candidacy will be considered alongside India’s proposal to stage the Games in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

The decision will be taken at the Commonwealth Games General Assembly in Glasgow this November. Durban, South Africa, was initially awarded the 2022 Games but lost the hosting rights in 2017 due to financial challenges, leaving the continent yet to feature as a host.

Confirming Nigeria’s bid, Commonwealth Sport President, Dr. Donald Rukare, said the development demonstrated the country’s commitment to the values of the Games. “We are delighted to confirm that India and Nigeria have submitted exciting formal proposals to host the centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games in 2030. This positive response demonstrates the continued significance and legacy potential of the Games,” he stated.

He added that the proposals would be assessed by the Evaluation Commission before recommendations are presented to the Executive Board and ultimately to the 74 member nations and territories.

Should Abuja secure the hosting rights, the Games are expected to provide a significant boost to sports development and infrastructure in Nigeria while marking a milestone for Africa in the Commonwealth sporting movement. (The Guardian)
