The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has commenced the process for the amendment of the Engineers (Registration, etc.) Act (as Amended) 2018.
The President of COREN, Prof. Sadiq Abubakar, made this known in a statement signed by Prof. Okorie Uche, Registrar of COREN in Abuja.
According to Abubakar, the committee to oversee the process has been inaugurated.
He underscored the importance of the assignment, noting that the review of the Act is critical to strengthening engineering regulation, aligning with global best practices, and ensuring the profession remains responsive to emerging national and international realities.
“The Committee, chaired by Kamila Maliki, is composed of seasoned engineering practitioners, legal experts, and stakeholders in the engineering ecosystem” he said.
Abubakar listed other members to include: Ejikeme U. Mgbemena, Deputy Chairman, Mrs. Margaret Oguntala, member, Andrew Onyilo, Secretary, Arowolo, Precious , Assistant Secretary and Dominic Udoatan, Member.
Other members include: Isyaka Kam-selem Alhaji Bukar, Umar Maikunkele,Cyril Onyeneke,Prof. Okorie Uche, Dr A. Amin and Folorunsho Oladoyin.
Abubakar stated that the Terms of Reference (ToR) mandated the Committee to review the Engineers Act 2018 to identify strengths and gaps and engage stakeholders across the engineering and allied sectors.
He added that the committee would also benchmark findings against global best practices; and recommend amendments to enhance COREN’s regulatory powers.
He said they would also improve disciplinary frameworks, strengthen institutional autonomy, and provide sustainable support for key programmes such as the Engineering Residency Programme (ERP).
He said the Committee is expected to submit its final report within three months.
