Ogbunike community in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State has been thrown into mourning following the sudden demise of their illustrious son, Dr. Chuma-Harris Odili fondly called Eze Ogbono, Ogene Ogbunike and Ogene Igbo.

News Express learnt that the tragedy occurred on Friday, August 23, 2025, shortly after Odili, who was contesting for the igweship position of his community following the passing of their traditional ruler, attended a public function hosted by his rival contender for the traditional stool of Ogbunike.

The Nollywood veteran, renowned culture promoter, journalist and public relations expert was up, exchanging pleasantries with some guests at the event. He made a move to spray money on some dancing women who were approaching, then stepped backwards and slumped on the ground.

He was immediately rushed to a hospital and placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), but was pronounced dead few hours later.

The shocking news of his passing came barely a day after he posted a message of peace and unity on his social media handle, a move many now describe as both symbolic and prophetic.

The death of Odili has sparked off an outpouring of grief across the social media space, where he is being celebrated as a fearless voice of truth.

Confirming the death of the respected veteran of many parts, his family said in a brief statement: “With deep sorrow but total submission to the will of the Almighty and our ancestors, we announce the transition of our illustrious son, father, brother, community leader, and custodian of culture, Eze Odinana Ogbunike, Dr. Harris Udokama Chuma-Odili (Ogene Ogbunike), Founder of Anambra Core Media Advocates, who joined his ancestors on 23rd August, 2025.” “As we mourn this irreplaceable loss, we also celebrate his remarkable life of service, cultural stewardship, and commitment to truth, justice, and community upliftment. We humbly request your prayers, solidarity, and support. Further details regarding the traditional and funeral arrangements shall be communicated in due course,” the family wrote.

Chuma-Odili, who was also widely known as a peace advocate, fearless activist, and community mobilizer, leaves behind a legacy of cultural pride, media activism, and commitment to the Igbo heritage.
