Nigerian broadcaster sets world record with 105-hour radio talk show

George Iniabasi Essien, popularly known as “Mighty George,” has secured a place in the Guinness World Records after hosting a radio talk show for 105 consecutive hours on Comfort 95.1 FM, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The marathon broadcast, which ran from April 27 to May 1, 2025, was staged to mark his 20th anniversary in broadcasting. It is now recognized as the longest marathon hosting of a radio talk show.

Speaking after the feat, the 43-year-old broadcaster said the attempt was a personal milestone and a way to bring global attention to Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria.

“I wanted to celebrate 20 years in radio and put Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria on the world map. This is the first individual record set in Akwa Ibom State and the first Nigerian broadcasting/radio record,” George said. “I felt an indescribable joy, fulfilment, and sense of achievement, especially as the first successful individual attempt in the state.”

George, who serves as Head of Programmes at Comfort FM, kept the show alive by hosting 60 in-studio guests and speaking to 20 others via telephone. Discussions covered sports, fashion, politics, governance, and current affairs.

He also included listener engagement segments such as a live quiz.

Although he initially set out to host for 90 hours, George extended his broadcast to 105 hours before mental and physical exhaustion forced him to stop. He was permitted five minutes of rest for every hour on air, which he saved up to eat, stretch, and take brief naps.

The attempt was not without challenges. George battled technical hitches, unavailable guests, discomfort, and even an intruder who nearly disrupted the event. Despite the obstacles, he described the experience as worthwhile.

“My voice has been a source of income for myself and family for a long time,” he said. “I hope to inspire young broadcasters and creative minds to push beyond limits and aim for greatness.”

George, a recipient of Nigeria’s Best Radio Presenter award and Nigerian Sports Journalist of the Year, has worked with Comfort FM for eight years, where he also anchors the flagship “Comfort Breakfast Fiesta” show from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m.
