The Abu Najim Police Department in Sirte has arrested six Nigerian nationals, a Libyan driver, and his mother for alleged involvement in human trafficking, authorities confirmed.

A statement from Migrant Rescue Watch (MRW) said the police intercepted a vehicle driven by the Libyan suspect, identified by his initials A.M.M., who was accompanied by his mother. The six undocumented Nigerian migrants were discovered inside the vehicle during the operation.

“Abu Najim Police Dept. (Sirte) seized a vehicle and arrested a Libyan driver (‘A.M.M.’) accompanied by his mother for attempted human smuggling of six undocumented migrants of Nigerian nationality. All referred to competent authorities for legal action,” MRW said.

The arrested Individuals have been handed over to the relevant legal authorities for prosecution.

Libya continues to serve as a key transit hub for migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea toward Europe. The country has seen persistent human smuggling activities, with many migrants facing detention, exploitation, and other risks along the journey. (The Guardian)
