Nigerian astronaut, Owolabi Salis
A US-based Nigerian lawyer and astronaut, Chief Owolabi Salis, is set to be immortalised in a monumental tribute designed by renowned American artist Steve N. Barber.
Salis made history on June 29, 2025, as the first Nigerian to travel to space beyond the Karman Line aboard Blue Origin’s NS-33 suborbital mission.
The monument, expected to last 1,000 years, will feature inspirational citations artistically engraved and will be unveiled on July 4, 2026, amidst a massive media spotlight and global attention.
According to Barber, the monument will serve as a beacon of inspiration, firing the zeal of Blacks and Nigerians towards greater quest for space exploration and limitless possibilities in scientific voyage.
“Owolabi Salis’ achievement has elevated Nigeria to higher esteem in global reckoning, thus conferring on him an elevated status as a foremost National Ambassador of his country, Nigeria,” Barber said.
He expressed hope that the monument will inspire future generations to pursue careers in science, technology, and space exploration.
Salis’ journey to space was not his first remarkable feat.
He previously became the first Black African to visit both the Arctic and Antarctic in the same season, showcasing his adventurous spirit and determination.
As a US-based lawyer, politician, and spiritual leader, Salis hopes his journey will spark interest in science and space exploration among young Africans.
The monument is designed by Steve N. Barber, a world-renowned space monument designer with 37 world-class monuments for accomplished astronauts.
After its unveiling on July 4, 2026, the monument will be conveyed to Salis’ birthplace in Ikorodu, Lagos State, serving as a symbol of national pride and inspiration for future generations. (Saturday Tribune)
