The Lagos State Government has said it is leveraging small and medium-scale enterprises to preserve and promote indigenous cultural values across the state.
It noted that local businesses serve not only as economic drivers but also as vital platforms for transmitting traditional knowledge, arts, and heritage.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mr. Idris Aregbe, said the government has launched a fresh fish sales initiative with free doorstep delivery for residents in Ajah, Lekki, and Victoria Island.
The initiative, he said, was in celebration of the annual Kayokayo Cultural Festival in Epe Division and in line with the Lagos Cultural Mission of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.
According to him, the initiative forms part of the state’s broader plan to integrate culture into economic development.
He noted that supporting culturally rooted businesses will help deepen public appreciation for heritage, create jobs, and foster community pride, especially among younger generations.
Aregbe noted that the move is also part of efforts to promote local commerce, spotlight indigenous resources, and deepen the link between culture and commerce.
“This is a unique initiative aimed at promoting local commerce, showcasing indigenous resources, and strengthening the connection between culture and commerce.
“The Kayokayo Festival, a major cultural highlight in Epe, continues to serve as a vibrant platform for cultural preservation, economic stimulation, and inter-generational exchange.
“The week-long festivities will feature traditional processions, cultural performances, food exhibitions, and other engaging activities, inviting both residents and visitors to experience the rich heritage of the Epe Division,” Aregbe was quoted as saying in a statement signed by the ministry’s Deputy Director, Public Affairs, Adeoti Sobowale.
He added, “Fish lovers will have the opportunity to order premium varieties of fresh fish sourced directly from the renowned Epe Fish Market. Available options include Wesafo Fish, Tilapia, White Catfish, Orange Fish, Barracuda, Red Snapper, White Snapper, Golden Fish, Mangala, Shining Nose Fish, Sona Fish (Eja-Abo), and Akokoniko Fish.
“Orders can be placed between 8 am and 3 pm on Friday, July 25, 2025, through the dedicated phone numbers.
“All deliveries will be made on the same day at no extra cost to residents within the listed areas,” the statement.
Aregbe emphasised that the initiative reflects the Lagos government’s commitment to celebrating cultural identity, empowering local economies, and engaging residents through innovative, community-centred approaches. (PUNCH)
