Ghana’s government is under pressure after reports emerged that nearly 200 Ghanaian students studying at the University of Memphis in the United States may be evicted due to unpaid tuition fees amounting to $3.6 million.
The affected students, currently enrolled in science, engineering, and business-related programmes, are beneficiaries of a Ghanaian government scholarship. However, the University has issued them an eviction notice, stating they must vacate their campus accommodation by August 9, 2025, unless the outstanding fees are paid.
Dr. Bill Hardgrave, President of the University of Memphis, confirmed the situation during an interview on Action News 5’s Better Memphis show.
“The students are sponsored by the government from Ghana, which has not paid the students’ tuition in some time,” he said.
He added that the total amount owed is $3.6 million, warning that the delay in payment could severely disrupt the students’ education.
“I think there was a regime change in Ghana and that affected the budget, but we’re hopeful that gets corrected because we’d love to keep those students on campus,” he explained.
If no urgent steps are taken, the students may be forced to drop out and return to Ghana. The looming deadline means their academic future now depends on a swift intervention from the Ghanaian government or support from other benefactors.
Without help, the students face eviction and a devastating interruption to their pursuit of academic success abroad. (Business Insider)
