Fortune Gomo, 39-year-old woman murdered in Dundee, Scotland
Some Nigerians in a local community in Dundee, a city in Scotland, have expressed worry after a Zimbabwean woman, Fortune Gomo, 39, was killed on South Road Street on Saturday.
Nigerian locals in the area who spoke with PUNCH Metro said on Monday that the situation sparked worries and raised safety concerns for the African community in the city.
According to the police, Gomo “died after being seriously injured” around 4:25 pm on Saturday.
According to locals, the deceased was reportedly stabbed by her assailant while walking on the road.
“She was stabbed,” a resident, Adedayomi Peter, told our reporter. “Everyone is worried,” he added.
The police in Scotland said they were treating the tragic incident as “murder,” noting that a 20-year-old suspect had been arrested in connection and was being arraigned on Monday. The police, however, did not give the name of the suspect.
“Fortune was treated by paramedics; however, she was pronounced dead at the scene. A post-mortem has taken place, and her death is now being treated as murder.”
“A 20-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with her death. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal and he is due to appear at Dundee Sheriff Court on Monday, 7 July 2025,” the police said in a statement published on its website.
The officer in charge of the inquiry, Detective Superintendent Peter Sharp, said, “Firstly, my thoughts remain with Fortune’s family at this incredibly sad time. They are being supported by specialist officers and I would ask that their privacy is respected.
“Our enquiries are continuing and I remain satisfied that the incident poses no wider risk to the public.
“At this early stage of the investigation, we are following a number of lines of inquiry. I am also acutely aware of content circulating on social media and would urge the public not to speculate about the circumstances of the incident.
“The public will notice a visibly increased police presence in the area and I would encourage anyone who has any concerns to speak with our officers.”
A leader of the Nigerian community in Dundee, who asked not to be named, said Gomo’s death was a big loss to the wider African community.
“She was an alumnus of the University of Dundee, a colleague and friend to some Nigerians in Dundee. We, the community, decided to show support and solidarity for her death, and also Police Scotland have given their reassurances that there is no current threat to us in the community as an arrest has been made,” the source stated in a chat with our correspondent.
He said, “The community had a roundtable meeting with some of the leadership of Police Scotland, and we spoke extensively on how the police can build trust with the African community in Dundee. They listened to us and they assured us of continued engagement in this matter.”
He explained that there had been peaceful demonstrations to show support for the victim. “Our peaceful demonstrations from the night of July 5, 2025, up till now have led us here, and they have been positive so far. If you check the Police Scotland website, it shows they have charged the perpetrator and they have confirmed it’s a murder charge.”
“We raised concerns about the increased knife crimes and anti-social behaviour in Dundee with Police Scotland. We also raise concerns about the wearing of balaclavas in public areas and streets which could cause increased fear and anxiety in the community.
“Also, we pointed out to the Police some negative and hate comments about this incident on social media and they have taken steps to deal with the situation. Also, they gave reassurances to report any of such posts that increased wider tension in the community to them,” he added.
The interim Principal and Vice Chancellor of the University of Dundee, Prof Nigel Seaton, said the university had been “left shocked” by the news of the death of Gomo, who was a postdoctoral research assistant in Geography until February 2022.
“Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and colleagues at this tragic time,” the VC said in a mail sent to members of the university. (The PUNCH, but headline rejigged)
