The President of the Nigeria Fencing Federation, Adeyinka Samuel, on Saturday in Abuja, said the federation is set to give all participants a befitting environment during the upcoming African Fencing Championships.

The president told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the prestigious event would feature over 200 athletes from 26 countries, including top fencers from around the continent.

“The championship will feature Olympic medalists, world silver medalists, and top-ranked fencers, including Egypt’s world number one fencer.

“This event marks a significant milestone for Nigeria, as it becomes the third Sub-Saharan African country to host the Senior African Championship after Senegal and Mali,” he said.

Adeyinka expressed confidence in the country’s ability to host a successful Senior Championship, noting that Nigeria had previously hosted the Junior Championship twice.

“We have a competent and strong field of atletes expected to participate, and the championship promises to be an exciting and competitive event,” he said.

The president said Nigeria has a promising lineup of athletes and believes this year’s tournament could mark a turning point for Nigerian fencing.

“Nigeria is yet to secure a medal at the African Fencing Championships, but I am optimistic about the team’s prospects this year.”

“Our athletes are more prepared than ever before.. We’ve invested heavily in coach development, international exposure, and high-performance training camps.

“With the support of the home crowd, our fencers are mentally and physically ready to make history.” Adeyinka said.

Adeyinka added that Nigeria is fast emerging as a hub for fencing in Africa and that this championship is a testament to the country’s consistent progress and dedication.

He said Fencing demands strategic thinking, self-discipline, and resilience.

“The sport is experiencing a resurgence, driven by a new generation of talented fencers who have gained valuable experience at international competitions.

“To the 26 African countries that have confirmed participation, bringing over 200 athletes, we promise a world-class experience,” Adeyinka said.

He mentioned some of the participants to include Angola, Senegal, Tunisia, Kenya, and Egypt among others.

The tournament will take place at Charterhouse Lagos, the venue that hosted Nigeria’s first Fencing tournament in 2024.

The 23rd African Fencing Championships will hold in Lagos from June 25 to 29.
