Naval personnel test their readiness
By EHIGIMETOR IGBAUGBA
No fewer than 1,000 personnel of the Eastern Naval Command of the Nigerian Navy demonstrated their commitment to operational readiness and physical fitness.
The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) the Command, Rear Admiral Saheed Akinwande, said that the exercise was in compliant with the Chief of Naval Staff’s directive.
Akinwande stated this during the conduct of the Second Quarter Route March on Saturday in Calabar.
He noted that the aim was to enhance the physical and mental fitness of personnel while showcasing the Navy’s operational strength.
The flag officer command emphasised the importance of physical fitness in maintaining combat readiness.
“This route march is geared towards sharpening the physical component of our fighting power—ensuring mental alertness and resilience in tackling security challenges,” he said
He also highlighted the command’s successes in maritime security, particularly in curbing crude oil theft, illegal bunkering, and other maritime crimes within its area of responsibility.
According to him, the Eastern Naval Command remains on top of its security obligations, and our personnel’s discipline and dedication are key to these achievements.
Akinwande urged the personnel to regularly assess their body mass index and adhere to fitness regulations, underscoring the Navy’s zero-tolerance for substandard physical conditioning.
The route march saw participation from all units, ships, and establishments under the Eastern Naval Command, as well as nearby formations in Calabar.
He commended the personnel for their impressive turnout and discipline, describing it as a testament to the command’s high standards.
“Today’s exercise reinforces the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to maintaining peak operational efficiency while sending a strong message of deterrence to criminal elements in the maritime domain,” he noted. (NAN)
