The Federal Government is set to roll out smart police stations across the country as part of efforts to modernise the Nigeria Police Force and improve national security through technology.
This development follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Galaxy Backbone (GBB) and the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) on Friday in Abuja.
Speaking during the ceremony, the Managing Director of GBB, Prof Ibrahim Adeyanju, described the partnership as a major leap in Nigeria’s digital transformation journey and a significant contribution to addressing security challenges through innovation.
“Now, our partnership with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund will support the establishment of smart police stations across the country powered by GBB’s fibre-optic network, eLTE, and cloud infrastructure.”
“This innovation will give birth to police stations with smart connectivity, surveillance, ECMS, artificial intelligence with a robust cybersecurity component. Smart policing means better surveillance, faster data access, improved reporting systems, and real-time coordination. By integrating secure digital platforms into policing, we are enhancing effectiveness, transparency, responsiveness, and public trust in law enforcement,” he said.
He added: “What we are witnessing today is a model for how government institutions can work together to solve big challenges around security and digital development through strategic collaboration and technological innovation.”
On his part, the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, Mohammed Sheidu, noted that the initiative is designed to reposition the police for 21st-century operations.
According to him, “This is a very symbolic MoU. This is because we plan to move the police to 21st-century standards.
“It only makes sense to strategically collaborate with GBB to achieve the digitalisation agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“One of the problems of the Nigerian Police Force is data collection and gathering. The initiative with GBB will be historic, as it would change the narrative in Nigeria’s security sector.”
The project is expected to significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the Nigeria Police Force, promote data-driven policing and boost public confidence in the nation’s security architecture. (Saturday Sun)
