BREAKING: FG to evacuate Nigerians from Israel, Iran as war escalates

The Federal Government says it is finalising emergency evacuation plans for Nigerian citizens stranded in Israel and Iran, following a major escalation in hostilities between the two countries.

A statement released Tuesday night by Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the Nigerian embassies in Tel Aviv and Tehran have commenced efforts to reach affected Nigerians and coordinate their safe evacuation.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to inform that following the escalation of the crisis between the State of Israel and the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Federal Government is finalising arrangements for the emergency evacuation of stranded Nigerians in both countries,” the statement read.

Nigerians in the conflict zones have been advised to remain calm, observe local security guidelines, and promptly register with the nearest Nigerian mission. According to the ministry, the embassies are working round the clock to compile lists of nationals and provide updates.

“The Ministry commends the efforts put in place by our Missions in Tel Aviv, Israel, and Tehran, Iran, for their dedication and commitment to reaching out to the Nigerian community in these difficult times,” Ebienfa stated.

The Federal Government also reiterated its commitment to the safety and welfare of citizens abroad and noted ongoing collaboration with international partners and local authorities to ensure a smooth evacuation process.

In addition to evacuation efforts, the government renewed its appeal for a ceasefire. “Nigeria reiterates its call for the immediate cessation of hostilities and urges all parties involved to embrace dialogue, respect international humanitarian law and prioritise the protection of civilians,” the ministry said.

The announcement comes in the wake of a deadly air campaign launched by Israel on Friday, targeting nearly 100 locations across Iran. The strikes reportedly killed several high-ranking Iranian military officials, including General Mohammad Bagheri, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Commander, Hossein Salami.

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, condemned the Israeli strikes as a “declaration of war” and warned of a “bitter and painful” retaliation. The Iranian military also vowed an unlimited response.

Further details about the evacuation, including timelines and logistics, are expected to be released via official channels in the coming days. (The Guardian, but headline rejigged)
