President Idriss Deby
In a bold move underscoring national pride and diplomatic reciprocity, Chad has announced the suspension of visa issuance to US citizens. The decision, revealed in a Facebook post by President Idriss Deby on Thursday, follows the inclusion of Chadian nationals in a recent US travel ban affecting 12 countries.
“I have instructed the government to act in accordance with the principles of reciprocity and suspend the issuance of visas to US citizens,” Deby stated.
The US travel ban, which includes seven African countries, has sparked criticism across the continent. Chad’s response marks one of the most direct retaliatory actions yet taken. While acknowledging the country’s limited material offerings compared to wealthier nations, President Deby stressed Chad’s sovereignty and dignity.
“Chad has no planes to offer, no billions of dollars to give, but Chad has its dignity and pride,” Deby added, in a pointed reference to Qatar’s reported $400 million gift of an aircraft to US President Donald Trump.
The decision highlights growing frustration among African nations over perceived discrimination in Western immigration policies. For Chad, the suspension is both a symbolic and practical message: it may lack economic might, but it will not remain passive in the face of policies it deems unjust.
As international reactions continue to unfold, Chad’s move signals a rising demand for respect and reciprocity in global diplomatic engagements. (AriseNews TV)
