There was pandemonium at the Alake Sports Complex, Ijeja, Abeokuta, one of the venues of the 2024 National Sports Festival, currently going on in Ogun State, following a gas explosion that erupted in the area.

A Vanguard report this Tuesday evening, May 20, 2025, said that the incident occurred while a gas truck supplying the complex’s generating set suddenly caught fire, triggering panic among athletes and spectators nearby, who all scampered for safety to avoid being caught up in the fire.

"Emergency responders were quick to the ground and the situation has been put under control.

"No confirmed casualties yet," the report said.

It added that events at the venue including handball, squash and badminton had resumed as of the time this story was filed.
