Triumphant Bayern Munich boos Vincent Kompany

Vincent Kompany has his first piece of silverware as Bayern boss, finally being able to celebrate with his team on Sunday after Bayer Leverkusen’s 2-2 draw in Freiburg, 24 hours after Bayern got themselves on the cusp of glory with a 3-3 draw at RB Leipzig.

While it’s the 34th time that Bayern as a club have been champions of Germany, it’s a first for the Belgian boss, whose only previous title as a coach was England’s Championship with Burnley in 2022/23.

Kompany: “What an incredible feeling!”

The 39-year-old made clear what this success means for himself and also his coaching staff: “We can take a moment now to enjoy winning the Bundesliga, what an incredible feeling! I want to congratulate the players for their outstanding effort throughout the season. You’ve done this together. You’ve won it as a team.” It’s also a first Bundesliga title for his assistants Aaron Danks, René Mari? and Floribert N‘Galula.

Bayern have been the dominant side in the Bundesliga during Kompany’s maiden campaign in charge. They’ve won the title with two games to spare, posting 76 points after 32 matches on the back of 23 wins, seven draws and only two defeats. The last time Bayern lost only twice in a season was in 2016/17 under Carlo Ancelotti.

Final games and Club World Cup

But the job is far from done yet. The final two Bundesliga fixtures at home to Borussia Mönchengladbach and then away at Hoffenheim aren’t just about underlining their status as champions but also about giving Thomas Müller, who reached 500 Bundesliga games for the club last week against Mainz, a worthy send-off. And there’s also the small matter of staying in shape for this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup, with Bayern heading to the USA on 10 June.

Once that tournament is over, focus will quickly turn to the 2025/26 season, where Kompany and his team will look to retain their Bundesliga crown and also add further silverware in other competitions. “Let’s keep pushing. The season’s not over yet, and there’s still so much to look forward to. Let’s finish strong, together!” Kompany stated. (FC Bayern Munich)
