Vice Admiral Ibok-Ekwe Ibas Rtd
The Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ekwe Ibas (Rtd), has vowed not to tolerate any form of disorder as he works to restore peace and stability in the state.
Speaking in a statewide broadcast on Thursday, Ibas stressed that his primary mandate is to re-establish law and order, stabilise the polity, and create a conducive environment for the restoration of democratic institutions.
“My approach will be guided by the rule of law and the fundamental rights of every resident. However, I will not condone any form of disorder or disregard for the peace and stability of the state,” he said.
Ibas assured the people of Rivers that he is not taking on the role as a partisan actor or a competitor in the ongoing political struggles. Instead, he emphasised that his appointment is a solemn duty to serve the state and restore its position as Nigeria’s oil and gas capital.
“I am here as a servant of the state, entrusted with the responsibility of bringing peace and order so that Rivers State can move forward once again,” he said.
He urged residents to remain united and cooperative, pointing out that addressing the challenges facing the state would require collective effort rather than division.
Vice Admiral Ibas also outlined his plans for the next six months of the emergency rule, pledging to restore governance and ensure the security of lives and property.
Ibas was appointed by President Tinubu to oversee the affairs of the state for the next six months, in a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday, while suspending the governor of the state.
“In the meantime, I hereby nominate Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd) as Administrator to take charge of the affairs of the state in the interest of the good people of Rivers State.” President Tinubu said.
The declaration comes just hours after an explosion was reported at an oil facility in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area.
The six-month state of emergency empowers the newly appointed sole administrator to stabilise Rivers State, address systemic breakdowns, and facilitate dialogue among conflicting parties. (The Guardian)
