Opposition ready to challenge Tinubu in 2027 — Atiku

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has announced that opposition figures in the country are now ready challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

Since he lost the 2023 presidential election, Atiku has been rallying opposition figures to take over power from the incumbent.

Addressing a press conference alongside other opposition figures at the Yar’adua center in Abuja on Thursday, Atiku said the gathering was the birth of opposition coming together ahead of the next elections.

Answering questions on whether the opposition coalition press conference signaled the coming together of opposition leaders, Atiku said, “this is the birth of the coalition of opposition ahead of 2027?.

On Tuesday, President Tinubu declared a State of Emergency in Rivers State, sacking the state Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his Deputy and members of the State House of Assembly, prompting a reaction from opposition figures.

Addressing a press conference on behalf of the opposition leaders at Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, on Thursday, Atiku accused Tinubu of favouritism.

Other opposition leaders present at the press conference include, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who is represented by Yunusa Tanko, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, National Secretary of the Coalition of United Political Parties, Peter Ameh, and Convenor of the Alternative, Segun Showunmi, among others.
