Nana Kazaure, Director of Strategic Communications, Obidient Movement
The Obidient Movement has expressed strong support for Senator Natasha Akpoti following her accusation of sexual harassment against Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, describing her decision to speak out as a courageous stand against workplace misconduct.
In a statement signed by Nana Kazaure, Director of Strategic Communications and Media on Tuesday, the group described the issue of sexual harassment in workplaces as a serious problem that undermines dignity, safety, and career progression while creating a hostile environment.
The statement partly reads, ?The impact of sexual harassment extends beyond the individual, affecting team dynamics, productivity, and the overall reputation of the organization. In a Senate with only four female senators, we are perturbed to have this kind of accusation leveled against the leader of this institution, which should lead the way in creating laws and the right atmosphere for the promotion of gender inclusivity.?
The movement acknowledged the fear and stigma that often prevent victims from speaking out, commending Natasha for taking a stand. However, it also stressed the need for a fair and transparent investigation.
?That she has spoken up does not necessarily make Senator Akpabio automatically guilty. We recognize this and urge all well-meaning Nigerians to stand with us in our call for an impartial and transparent investigation of this grievous allegations, made more so by the fact that they are leveled against the leader of a hallowed institution as the Senate,? the statement continued.
Reaffirming its stance against sexual discrimination and gender bias, the group urged the Senate to set an example in promoting gender inclusivity and respect.
?The Obidient Movement has zero-tolerance for any form of sexual discrimination and gender bias. We stress that the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria ought to be leading the charge to foster a culture of respect and equality in our society, particularly in gender relations.?
The statement also called for a thorough investigation by the committee set up to examine the allegations, stressing that justice must not only be done but must also be seen to have been done. (Text, excluding headline: Nigerian Tribune)
