The UK introduced a new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system, changing how travellers from certain countries can enter the UK on January 8, 2025.

The new system affects a group of nations, including three African countries, which previously had visa-free access to the UK.

The countries affected by this change in Africa are Botswana, Mauritius, and Seychelles. Citizens from these nations must now obtain pre-travel authorization before flying to the UK.

The UK government launched this system to streamline border entry processes and improve security.

Previously, travellers from these countries could simply board a flight with their passports and undergo checks upon arrival at any UK airport. However, with the introduction of the ETA, these travellers must now complete a digital application process before departure. Namibia was once on this list but was removed in 2023.

The new requirements apply to a range of travellers, including those coming for tourism, family visits, business trips, short-term studies, or those attending a permitted paid engagement or coming under the Creative Worker visa concession.

It also affects those transiting through the UK, even if they do not pass through UK border control. The ETA requirement is for trips lasting up to six months.

The UK ETA system will be rolled out in two phases. The first phase, which began on January 8, 2025, affects 54 countries, including Botswana, Mauritius, and Seychelles. From this date, citizens of these nations will need to apply for an ETA before travelling to the UK.

The second phase, starting on March 5, 2025, will affect 34 European Union (EU) countries, with travellers needing an ETA from April 2, 2025. However, citizens of these countries who are already residents in the UK are not required to apply for an ETA.

Travellers from affected countries can apply for the ETA through the official UK government app or directly on the government’s website. The application process is straightforward. The fee for the ETA is £10 (approximately $12.50), and the application is non-refundable.

The mobile app allows for quicker processing times, with decisions typically made within 10 minutes. Applicants must upload a passport photo, take a selfie, and provide answers to questions regarding their travel plans.

For those applying through the website, the application process takes about 20 minutes and must be completed in one sitting.

Once approved, the ETA is valid for two years. During this time, the applicant can make multiple visits to the UK, provided the purpose of each visit falls within the categories covered by the ETA.

However, there is a crucial point to note: the ETA is digitally linked to the passport. If a traveller gets a new passport during the validity period of their ETA, they will need to apply for a new ETA. (BusinessDay)
