10 most powerful passports in the World 2024

Passports of various countries

The strength of a passport is primarily measured by how many destinations its holders can access visa-free or with visa-on-arrival. Based on data from the Henley Passport Index, the following are the world’s top 10 most powerful passports in 2024.

This index, updated yearly, by Henley & Partners, ranks passports across 227 global destinations. Here are the ten most powerful passports in the world.

1. Singapore

The Singaporean passport tops the 2024 list. It allows visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 195 destinations. Singapore has consistently ranked high for several years, reflecting its strong international relationships and favourable visa policies.

2. France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain

Tied for the second spot, citizens of these countries have access to 194 destinations without needing a visa. The strength of these passports highlights extensive international ties and the ease of travel for their residents.

3. Austria, Finland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, South Korea, Sweden

These seven countries are in the third tier, with access to 193 destinations. Strong EU and Asian representation here shows the ease of travel for these nationalities within Europe and beyond.

4. Belgium, Denmark, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland, United Kingdom

Passports from these six nations grant access to 190 destinations. The UK’s position here is noteworthy as it re-establishes global connections.

5. Australia, Portugal

Australians and Portuguese passport holders can travel to 189 destinations visa-free or with visa-on-arrival due to favourable travel agreements and stable foreign relations.

6. Greece, Poland

With 188 accessible destinations, Greece and Poland enjoy a wide travel reach, supported by EU membership and Schengen Area benefits.

7. Canada, Czech Republic, Hungary, Malta

These countries rank with 187 destinations available for free movement. Canada ranks because of its diplomatic strength and network of global relationships.

8. United States

The U.S. ranks eighth, with its passport granting access to 186 destinations. Despite slight limitations compared to some other nations, it remains one of the strongest passports globally.

9. Estonia, Lithuania, United Arab Emirates

At 185 destinations, the UAE has been the biggest climber in recent years, moving up 44 places since 2014. UAE is driven by extensive efforts to strengthen diplomatic relations.

10. Iceland, Latvia, Slovakia

Iceland, Latvia and Slovakia round out the top 10, offering their citizens access to 183 destinations. This shows how even smaller nations can maintain strong travel privileges.

These rankings reflect the impact of diplomatic relations on travel ease and international access.
