Delta State has the highest rate of drug use and abuse in Nigeria?s South-South region, according to Dr Ngozi Mogholu, Permanent Secretary of the Delta State Ministry of Youth Development.

Mogholu warned of a rise in internet fraud, revealing that many youths have escalated from basic cybercrime, known as ?Yahoo,? to more dangerous practices termed ?Yahoo Plus,? which endanger lives, particularly young girls.

Speaking at the third quarterly meeting of the State Peace Architecture (SPA), organised by the international non-governmental organisation Search for Common Ground, Mogholu, who also chairs the SPA, expressed deep concern over the growing trends in drug abuse and cybercrime.

?The rise in drug abuse is alarming, and we are putting significant efforts into addressing the issue,? she stated, noting that one such initiative is the ?E-7 series,? aimed at reducing criminal activity and social vices in the state.

She also highlighted the ministry?s recent awareness campaign, which included a roadshow last month to promote positive values among young people and encourage them to avoid deviant behaviour.

Matthew Omikah, Governance and Advocacy Officer for Search for Common Ground, explained that the SPA aims to empower communities to address the root causes of conflict. ?The goal is for communities to handle their challenges, escalate them to relevant authorities when needed, and rely on SPA for issues beyond their reach,? he said.

Omikah outlined a three-tier structure for conflict resolution, beginning at the community level, moving to local authorities, and finally, the state, emphasising that a proactive approach to conflict can foster lasting peace. (The Guardian)
