Governor Hyacinth Alia
A Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Makurdi, on Wednesday, ordered the remand of 35-year-old Paul Gyenger at a custodial centre in Makurdi for allegedly calling the Benue State governor a womaniser.
Gyenger was accused of insulting Governor Hyacinth Alia on social media, referring to him as a ?chronic womaniser.?
The police charged Gyenger, a native of Benue State, with cyberstalking and defamation of character after a complaint was filed by the governor?s Aide-de-Camp (ADC), ASP Ver Ingyatu.
According to reports, the ADC alleged that Gyenger, using a Facebook account under the name Terna Sunday Tyo, made derogatory statements about the governor, calling him a ?chronic womaniser? and using abusive language in Tiv.
During the case?s mention, Inspector Godwin Ato, the prosecution counsel, confirmed that the complaint was lodged at the Anti-cyber Crimes and Narcotics Unit in Makurdi on October 16, 2024.
Chief Magistrate Kelvin Mbanongun, citing a lack of jurisdiction, declined to take Gyenger?s plea and ordered his remand.
The case has been adjourned until December 17, 2024, for further proceedings. (Daily Trust)
