Degema Local Government Secretariat
Following the withdrawal of the police from the various local government secretariats in Rivers state, some individuals have sealed the council headquarters of Degema Local Government Area of the state.
They were led by the member representing Degema in the House of Assembly, the former council chairman, and the Peoples Democratic Party chairman of the local government.
They insist the council remains sealed and the new chairman won?t be let in to the council until ?a proper election is conducted.?
They further accused the governor, Siminalayi Fubara, of disobedience to the rule of law.
This coincides with the resumption of office of the newly elected local government officials.
The local government election went ahead in Rivers State on Saturday despite opposition to the exercise many different parties.
Despite the police opting out of the exercise that produced the newly elected LG chairmen, Governor Siminalayi Fubara insisted that the election be held on Saturday.
The Action People?s Party (APP) won 22 chairmanship positions out of 23 in the oil-rich state while the Action Alliance (AA) won a seat.
With the conclusion of the election and declaration of results, Governor Fubara swore in the 23 newly elected local government chairmen on Sunday.
However, some of the LG bosses did not find it easy with assumption of duty on Monday as many were attacked.
Some local government secretariats were also set on fire by some thugs to prevent the new officials from accessing their new offices. (Courtesy, excluding headline, Channels TV)
