FCT MINISTER, Nyesom Wike
Political tensions seem to be mounting in Rivers State following a statement by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike.
On Saturday, September 1, Wike threatened to instigate a political crisis in any state governed by a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader who interfered in Rivers State’s affairs.
But the Rivers Elders and Leaders Forum condemned the statement, accusing Wike of continually threatening individuals with opposing political views.
During a press briefing in Port Harcourt, the elders expressed concern that Wike’s actions are aimed at destabilising governance in the oil-rich state.
The group questioned why Wike would not extend to his successor the same freedom to govern that he was afforded during his time in office.
They urged President Bola Tinubu to call the FCT Minister to order, accusing Wike of creating unnecessary political tension in his efforts to unseat Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Rufus Ada George, a former Governor of Rivers State and Chairman of the Rivers Elders Forum, addressed journalists in Port Harcourt.
Speaking on behalf of the group, George said Wike’s remarks should not be taken lightly, warning that such actions could have far-reaching consequences .
The elders concluded by calling on the President to step in and restore calm, warning that the political atmosphere in Rivers is being overheated. (Channels TV)
