United States-based researcher, Ayanfeoluwa Oluyomi, a PhD candidate in Computer Science at Missouri University of Science and Technology, has developed a device to detect manipulations in electricity and water billing systems.

Oluyomi’s work focuses on anomaly detection in cyber-physical systems, which involve interaction between the physical and cyber worlds.

In an interview, Oluyomi explained that his technology can identify individuals or groups attempting to manipulate smart meters.

The system can detect such, ensuring accurate billing and preventing redistribution of costs to other consumers.

Oluyomi, a member of Creative Research in Wireless Mobility and Networking (CRewMaN), noted that this technology is not limited to electricity and water billing but any system where physical and digital worlds intersect.

To adopt this, he noted, it is key to have a robust infrastructure, including smart meter connection to utility firms.

His research Involves developing real-time, lightweight algorithms that identify and differentiate between normal and anomalous behaviour in cyber-physical systems.
