A traditional ruler, Aladeshonyin of Odo-Noforija, Oba Babatunde Ogunlaja, has called on governments to accord Isese Day the same status as other national holidays.

The traditional ruler made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday at Epe Town, in Lagos, in commemoration of Isese Day.

NAN reports that some southwest states, including Lagos state, declared Aug. 20, as a public holiday to allow participants to mark the day.

The annual Isese Day celebration, known for its vibrant displays and traditional rites, underscores the significance of cultural identity in a rapidly changing world.

The traditional ruler advocated for governments’ involvement in Isese Day celebration on a larger scale.

According to him, there is a need for governments at all levels to actively promote and preserve the nation’s cultural heritage, traditions, and origins for national prosperity.

He emphasised the need for citizens to connect with their roots and understand the practices of their ancestors.

“The government’s inability to uphold our cultural heritage, traditions, and norms is contributing significantly to setbacks in our society.

“For the nation to progress and develop, governments at all levels must recognise and uphold the rite of its cultures, traditions, and heritage,” he said.

According to the traditional ruler, Isese Day is a time of honour for the Yoruba people, showcasing the rich cultural heritage and traditions of the race.

He expressed pride In the resilience and importance of Yoruba customs and urged everyone to preserve these traditions for future generations.

“This day serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving our traditions and the unity that binds us together as a people,” he said. (NAN)
