Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) said it has earmarked N1 billion to improve the welfare of its workers.

It said that larger percentage of the money will be spent on issues around staff housing and appreciation for retiring staff, disclosing that JAMB will soon sign an agreement with the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) after relevant approvals have been secured.

JAMB, in its weekly bulletin released in Abuja, on Monday, noted that its Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, presented the suggestion at the management meeting of the Board, and endorsement was secured for such intervention.

He said: “This Initiative aims to enhance staff welfare and prevent unacceptable behavior by providing a safety net for retiring staff.N3 million to N10 million will be paid to the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) for housing arrangements for retiring staff, depending on their rank and years of service. This will ensure that staff have a roof over their heads upon retirement.

“Alternatively, staff who opt out of the housing offer or have insufficient years of service to cover the payments should there be outstanding amount after the amount paid by the Board will receive a payment also known as a “handshake” payment of same ranging from N3 million to N10 million upon retirement.”

Prof. Oloyede said the financial support for retiring staff is an indication that the Board is ensuring that they have a comfortable transition into retirement. “This initiative will not only benefit the staff members directly, but also contribute to a positive work environment and overall morale within the organization.”

The Registrar thus urged staff to strive for excellence, shun irregularities, and follow the path of accountability, transparency, and due process, emphasizing that JAMB will continue to seek government approval to improve staff welfare, but warned that any deviation from expected standards would be counterproductive.

Meanwhile, members of management described the action of the Registrar as thoughtful proposal, saying the decision to set aside N1 billion for staff welfare demonstrates the Registrar’s commitment to the well-being of staff. (Daily Sun)
