President Tinubu, IPOB Leader Kanu
By PAMELA EBOH, Awka
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu may soon harken to the cry of Ndigbo and release the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, News Express learnt yesterday, Monday, July 8, 2024.
According to an inside source who spoke on condition of anonymity, Tinubu is considering releasing Kanu under amnesty on October 1 this year.
Kanus long detention has continued to attract widespread concerns, prompting numerous stakeholders, including South East Governors and members of the National Assembly to appeal to President Tinubu for a political solution to the situation.
Also, notable Igbo leaders, including the late Mbazulike Amaechi and Chukwuemeka Ezeife, had previously met with former President Muhammadu Buhari to secure Kanus release but failed, despite Buhari's assurances before exiting office in 2023.
Kanus legal team has maintained that their client has fulfilled the conditions for his release, describing further detention as unlawful.
President Tinubus potential amnesty for Kanu is seen as a gesture of goodwill and a bid to ease tensions in the South-East.
It is expected to pave the way for dialogue and reconciliation, potentially ending the pro-Biafra agitation.
