The Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has detained one of its officers over the death of one Oyebuchi Anene in Abuja.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the FCT, SP Josephine Adeh, said this in a statement on Friday in Abuja.

Adeh said the tragic and unprecedented incident happened in Byazhin area of Abuja on Wednesday at about 9:45pm.

She said the Commissioner of Police (CP) in charge of the FCT, Mr Benneth Igweh, has ordered an investigation into the incident.

Adeh said the CP has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department to commence an immediate and discreet investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.

She said the CP expressed his profound and heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the public at large.

Adeh said the CP condemned the unprofessional and disheartening conduct of the police officer while he assured the family and the public of swift justice.

The deceased was reportedly shot during an argument with a police officer on Wednesday.

According to a witness, trouble started after the late Anene was involved in a minor accident with an okada rider.

He reportedly settled with the okada rider and his passenger and was about going into the nearby estate where he resides when policemen arrived the scene.

The officers had reportedly asked him to follow them to their station, but he refused on the grounds that the issue had been resolved while okada man and his passenger had left.

During the argument, a policeman was said to have shot the deceased at a close range. The victim was rushed to Kubwa General Hospital, from where he was referred to National Hospital, Abuja, but he could not make it back to life. (Pieced together from reports by NAN and Daily Trust)
