Governor Mbah
By STANLEY NWANOSIKE
The Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities (JONAPWD) has made three critical requests to Gov. Peter Mbah’s administration, meant to better their welfare and include them in governance.
This is contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Chairman of JONAPWD, Enugu State Chapter, Mr Onyebuchi Mba, and its Secretary, Mr James Edeh, in Enugu.
The statement said that as it is enshrined in the 2023 Enugu State Discrimination Against Persons With Disabilities Prohibition Law, the association was soliciting the establishment of a State Disability Commission to uphold the rights and needs of PWDs.
It noted that the commission would serve as a vital mechanism for promoting inclusivity, ensuring equal opportunities, and safeguarding the interests of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) across all spheres of the society.
The statement also advocated for the appointment of a Special Senior Assistant (SSA) on Disability Matters in the government, adding that this strategic appointment would demonstrate a resounding commitment to inclusion, equity, and fairness in governance.
According to the statement, the SSA will act as a dedicated advocate for disability rights, a bridge between the government and the disability community, and a catalyst for policy formulation and implementation to address the unique challenges faced by PWDs.
The statement said that the association also wanted to bring to the notice of the governor that his approval for gratuity payment to retired civil servants with disabilities is yet to be implemented by the state treasury office.
“Consequently, we beseech you to issue an executive order to expedite the implementation of the gratuity payment to retired civil servants with disabilities.
“This executive order is vital in ensuring the prompt disbursement of the approved gratuity to this vulnerable group, in alignment with your leadership ideology of human capital development.
“The approval of the gratuity payment signifies the government’s earnest recognition of the challenges faced by this special community and the commitment to alleviating their financial burden.
“Despite your office’s proactive response and approval, the implementation by the State Treasury office has encountered delays, leading to a prolonged wait for retired PWDs to receive their well-deserved gratuity.
“Therefore, Your Excellency’s executive order would play a pivotal role in expediting the execution of your directive, ensuring that the retired PWDs receive their rightful entitlement alive without further delay,” it said. (NAN)
