Three leading Premier League clubs have been enmeshed in a doping scandal after being named in a report in which a British doctor claimed to have worked with professional athletes who used banned treatments.
The affected football clubs are Arsenal, Chelsea and current table toppers Leicester. All three, reacting to the report published this morning in The Sunday Times said they were “extremely disappointed” over the doping claims, insisting that nothing like that happened.
The earth-shaking Sunday Times report quotes Dr Mark Bonar as claiming that he doped upwards of 150 sports stars. Premier League footballers, an England cricketer, British Tour de France cyclists, a boxing champion and tennis players are among his alleged clients.
The report said that Dr Bonar was secretly filmed describing how he prescribed banned performance- enhancing drugs to 150 elite sportsmen, including Premier League footballers.
The Sunday Times said its investigation “found that Dr Mark Bonar charges sports stars thousands of pounds for illicit drug programmes.”
Yesterday, Britain’s culture secretary, John Whittingdale, ordered an inquiry into the taxpayer-funded UK Anti-Doping (Ukad) watchdog, “which was given evidence about the doctor’s doping activities two years ago, but failed to take any action to stop him,” the report said.
“Bonar, 38, who is based at a private London clinic, made a series of extraordinary disclosures in meetings,” the report said, adding: “He says the athletes he treats with banned substances have achieved ‘phenomenal’ improvements in their performance.
