The Police in Rivers State had arrested a middle-aged man identified as Michael Chidozie, a father of three children, accused of assaulting his wife to death in their private residence in Agip area of Mile 4, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Late Mrs Ufuoma Eriera Chidozie, who hails from Delta State, a mother of three boys (aged 10, seven and five respectively), was reported to have died after sustaining injuries resulting from the beating of her husband in the early hours of Tuesday, March 5.
A source in the area who preferred anonymity disclosed that the husband of the victim fled the house after inviting the brother of the deceased to the house informing him that there was an emergency at home.
The source revealed that when the deceased’s brother arrived the house, he only found the lifeless body of his sister inside, as the husband was nowhere to be found.
The accused man was however arrested on Wednesday morning by the Agip Police Division, Mile 4, Port Harcourt following credible intelligence.
Confirming the arrest of the suspect, Chidozie, the Public Relations Officer of Rivers State Police Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, said he is currently in Police detention.
Iringe-Koko, in a telephone conversation, noted that the suspect following his arrest was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Port Harcourt for discreet investigation.
She said, “The suspect has been arrested. He has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Port Harcourt for discreet investigation.”
Meanwhile, a police officer conversant with the nature of the crime disclosed that an autopsy would be carried out on the corpse of the late Ufuoma to ascertain the veracity of allegation against the suspect.
Our correspondent learnt that the remains of the victim had been deposited in the mortuary, pending the conclusion of investigation before she would be buried. (Daily Independent: Text, Excluding Headline)
