Zamfara Government has directed security agencies to investigate the death of one Alhaji Magaji Lawali, allegedly killed by members of the newly established Community Protection Guards (CPG).

The incident was said to have occurred in Tsafe Local Government Area of the state.

A statement issued in Gusau on Tuesday by the Secretary to the State Government, Malam Abubakar Nakwada, indicated that the deceased was a member of the outlawed Yansakai vigilante group in the area.

Nakwada said initial report indicated that the man died following confrontation with some operatives of the CPG.

He said the government was aware of skirmishes between the outlawed group and the newly established CPG, but assured that the situation was under control.

“The government is committed to ensuring that anyone found culpable in this incident will be sanctioned to the full extent of the law.

“The CPG operatives are reminded of their legal obligations to operate strictly within the confines of the law.

“Members of the CPG have a stringent responsibility to adhere to the established rules of engagement in all operations,” he added.

He called on members of the general public to continue with their daily activities without fear.

“Measures have been taken to guarantee the maintenance of law and order in the affected area and across the state,” Nakwada assured.

Meanwhile, Sen. Kabiru Marafa has appealed to the state government to fish out those responsible for the death of Lawali.

Marafa made the appeal during a press conference in his home town, Yandoto, shortly after attending the funeral prayer of the deceased.

He noted that the CPG was established by Gov. Dauda Lawal with good intention to address the security challenges facing the state, but alleged that some criminal elements have infilterated it.

“I am therefore appealing to the Governor not to allow some people to politicise his good efforts in fighting banditry in the state.”

According to him, an autopsy conducted to ascertain the cause of the death is being awaited.

Marafa appealed to the people of the community to remain calm and go about their normal businesses. (NAN)
