A Magistrate Court in Maiduguri, theBorno state capital has sentenced Professor Abdulfattah A. Aboaba of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) to two years in custody for criminal intimidation punishable under Section 397 of the Penal Code.

A copy of the judgment which was made available to newsmen in Maiduguri on Friday revealed that “the Convict was sentenced after a letter of complaint received by the Commissioner of Police, Borno State Command on 3rd November, 2021 from Professor Shehu Mustapha Liberty, alleging intimidation and threat to life which led to Investigation and subsequent trial by the Magistrate Court.”

During the trial, witnesses were called by the Prosecution and Defence who testified before the trial judge who allowed the Defence Counsel to cross examine all prosecution witnesses to ascertain the veracity of the accusation.

In sentencing the accused, Alhaji Saleh Isa, Senior Magistrate Grade 1 (one) took into account of the plea made by the Defence Counsel that the Convict was a first offender and had been of good character, he was going to be lenient, and sentenced the accused to two years in Custody with an alternative to pay the sum of N10, 000 only in default.

Professor Abdulfattah A. Aboaba and Professor Shehu Mustapha Liberty had misunderstanding on the 29th October,2021 during Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU UNIMAID Congress Meeting which led to the case. (Daily Independent)
