Residents of the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, area; Ijaw Quarters, and the Police Officers’ wives of “A” Division Police Barracks, all in Warri South Local Government area of Delta State, today carried out a peaceful protest at the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) office in the area.

According to the demonstrators, their protest was necessitated by epileptic power supply to their areas for some time now, even when they had been consistent with their bill payments.

The protesters expressed pains and dissatisfaction over the situation that has resulted in the consistent blackout in their various areas.

A resident of the Police Barracks, Newport, Mrs. Ladi Ishiaku, claimed that her area had been without electricity supply for over four months.

Another respondent who resides at Ijaw Quarters, Mrs. Justina Obaragbe, said, "We have been in darkness since August, 2023 till date.”She appealed to the electricity distribution company to restore electricity as the persistent blackouts had significantly affected her business negatively.

Responding to the situation, A BEDC official, who desired to remain anonymous, expressed concern over the ability of BEDC to provide needed electricity, saying that the power situation was general and worrisome.

He traced the challenge to the recent collapse of the national grid but expressed hope that the situation would soon be rectified.
