The Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Ile-Ife Branch, has expressed concern at the prolonged strike by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria JUSUN, Osun chapter.

The union had embarked on the strike to protest alleged high handedness by the leadership of the judiciary headed by Justice Adepele Ojo, the Chief Judge.

Mrs. Modupe Olufemi, the NBA’s Branch Chairperson, in a statement made available to newsmen on Sunday in Ile-Ife, described as regrettable the strike, which had affected the operation of the judiciary since Nov. 22.

She said that the union’s grievances included the withholding of allowances and the non-reinstatement of certain suspended staff, among others.

Olufemi urged the Osun government to intervene in the work dispute with a view to re-establishing normalcy in the state judiciary.

“Concurrently, we appeal to the leadership of JUSUN to permit the ongoing dialogue process to reach its conclusion, as we firmly believe that a peaceful resolution is in the best interest of all concerned parties.

“The gravity of this situation cannot be overstated, especially considering the profound impact on the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

“The strike’s ripple effect on the economic well-being of lawyers within the state is of paramount concern, exacerbating the challenges faced by litigants seeking expeditious justice through the courts,” she said.

The chairperson said that the strike has precipitated a dire situation for numerous inmates who, despite being granted bail, find themselves unable to perfect their release, with an unsettling uncertainty about the duration of the strike.

She said that the legal fraternity is grappling with formidable challenges as practitioners find their daily routines disrupted due to the closure of court facilities.

“Recognising the broader consequences, we acknowledged the substantial loss of revenue incurred by the judiciary, adversely affecting the indispensable services it renders on a daily basis.

“The entire legal ecosystem is navigating uncharted waters, and we firmly believe that a swift resolution is imperative for the collective well-being of all stakeholders.

“We maintain our optimism that, through collaborative efforts and constructive dialogue, a resolution can be achieved.

“Reinstating a sense of normalcy and ensuring the seamless operation of the judiciary. Your attention to this urgent matter is deeply appreciated, and we eagerly anticipate a swift and positive response,” Olufemi said. (NAN)
