Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command and Department of State Services (DSS) have stormed Eke Oyibo Market, Amawbia, Awka South Local Council to chase away 15 vigilantes allegedly deployed to disrupt a meeting of traders who had gathered to pray and adopt the removal of two executives and a member of the market leadership.

Ahead of theassembly, a top administrative officer at Awka South Local Council, had, allegedly, come to the venue to stop the meeting. He was, however, resisted by angry-looking traders.

The meeting was convened, yesterday, by thepresident of the Amawbia Market Amalgamated Traders Association (AMATA), Daniel Nwokoye, with an agenda to adopt the removal of suspended vice president, Uchendu Nwachukwu;secretary, Oraedum Chinelo; and a member,Peter Nwogbo.

It was gathered that 30 minutes after the exit of the top officer, the armedvigilantes invaded the venueto disrupt the meeting, but for prompt intervention of officers of the police command and DSS.

Later, the President of AMATA read the resolution of the executive committee, dated September 7, 2023, affirming the passage of a vote of no confidence, suspension, and removal of Nwachukwu, Chinelo and Nwogbo for alleged engagement in anti-union activities.

The assembly endorsed Ubah Favour as vice president and Victor Okoye as secretary. (The Guardian)
