Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has said it will take decisive action against indigenous oil companies that violate labour laws.

The President of the association, Festus Osifo, stated this at the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, yesterday.

Osifo, in his address, observed that although indigenous oil and gas companies play pivotal role in the growth of Nigeria’s economy, it was disheartening to witness the exploitation of Labour laws and the inhumane treatment of employees by some of the companies, warning that action may soon be taken against errant companies.

He said: “One of the major concerns is that some of these companies are preventing qualified members from registering to join the association as provided in the Labour Law and in the Nigeria Constitution. This deprivation of membership rights is not only a violation of their fundamental human rights as enshrined in all laws and statuses to which the country is a signatory to, but also prevents entrenching a better working condition and protection of the workforce. A more decisive action will soon be taken against such management to serve as a deterrent to others.”

On fuel subsidy, Osifo said one of the main factors contributing to the ongoing challenge is heavy reliance on imported refined petroleum products.

According to him, Nigeria, as an oil-rich nation, has the potential to become a major player in the refining industry if the Federal Government taked decisive action and encourages local refining of crude oil.

He said: “The establishment of refineries across the country would require a skilled workforce and would attract investments, leading to the creation of thousands of direct and indirect jobs

“PENGASSAN therefore demands, for the umpteenth time, that the Federal Government of Nigeria should take bold steps to encourage local refining of crude oil. It is time for us to unlock our potential and seize control of our energy future.” (The Guardian)
