The Kwara State chapter of the People’s Democracy Party (PDP) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to halt further disbursement of local government allocation to the state until elections are conducted.
The party made the call during a press briefing by its chairman, Hon. Babatunde Mohammed, who was flanked by other leaders in Ilọrin, the state capital, yesterday.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq had penultimate week submitted the State Local Government Electoral Amendment Bill 2023 to the House of Assembly for consideration and passage.
The bill which has scaled second reading is aimed at amending sections 20, 21, 25, 26, 27, 29 and 105 to change the number of days for notice of election and other related matters in tune with the country’s electoral act.
But Hon. Mohammedclaimed the move was to deliberately delay the conduct of the election till 2025. The party said the government has refused to obey several court orders on the issue, describing it as impunity.
According to the party, the recent composition announcementof members of the board of the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWASIEC) was in a bid to deceive the public.
Several calls made to the Commissioner of Communication, Bola Olukoju, seeking response to the development were not answered. Also, he was yet to respond to a text message as of the time of filing this report. (Daily Trust)
